I would avoid anything north of the city. Nightmare getting home in the evenings. Tega Cay and the Fort Mill area (basically the same) are good as are Lake Wylie and Rock Hill. All of those are in SC, which is where we live. Lower taxes, more house for your money (mostly), and a government that knows how to spend the money it takes in somewhat responsibly.
If you insist on NC, I would say stick with S Charlotte, the Concord area, or out west past the airport. You can also look at Waxhaw and Weddington depending on how much you want to spend.
If you hate traffic and congestion, areas to avoid: anything north on 77, Indian Trail, Indian Land, and anything close to uptown.
I have a good Realtor friend when you get ready to buy.
